What is an EV Charger?

Electric vehicles use a bit more power than a microwave. EV charger installations with Solar Power Direct are seamless, providing you with a specialised connection for faster charging at home.

EV Chargers can be up to 10x as powerful as a regular wall socket!

How do EV Chargers Work?

Home EV Chargers are installed in your garage for easy access to the vehicle. You can plug it in overnight and be ready to go in the morning with a full charge.

They use a dedicated connection to your home switchboard, so you can charge much faster than if you used a regular wall socket.

If you have solar panels, there is the opportunity to charge your vehicle with 100% self-generated renewable energy!

Why get a Home EV Charger?

Charging your electric vehicle at home has a number of benefits:

  • Convenience - you won't need to hunt around for a public charging station.
  • Save money - Use energy from your own solar panels and reduce your electricity bill
  • Energy storage - some systems allow your vehicle to act as a home battery, storing energy for later use.

What charger do I need?

There are two main things you need to consider:

  • The charging speed that you require.
  • The connection type on your vehicle.

Charging speed

Charging speed is determined by the "Level" of connection.

Level 1 chargers plug into a standard 10 amp wall socket. They deliver a slow charge of about 2kW per hour - which could take more than 20 hours to fully charge a large battery. Most new electric vehicles include a Type 1 charger, which means you can start charging your car without needing to install anything.

Level 2 chargers have a dedicated unit attached to your garage wall. A single-phase connection delivers about 7kW per hour, which means most vehicles will be fully charged overnight. Three-phase connections are triple the speed with around 22kW of power. Type 2 chargers need to be installed by a qualified electrician - Solar Power Direct can assist you with getting started.

Level 3 chargers are usually only found in public charging stations. They use high-voltage direct current to deliver up to 350kW, which can charge some vehicles in as little as 1.5 hours - Most EVs have a lower limit and don't utilise the full speed of a type 3 charger.

Vehicle connection type

It's also important to consider the shape of the plug on your vehicle.

Type 1 is an older five-pin design that is no longer used for new vehicles in Australia.

Type 2 is a seven-pin design that is the current standard in Australia.

CSS2 is an extension of the Type 2 design that allows the vehicle to use the extra power of a Level 3 charging station. Vehicles with the CSS2 connection are completely compatible with Type 2 plugs.
